Joan has been teaching since the year 2000, first teaching younger kids the basics of ballet. Later, as a professional dancer, Joan's eye for detail and organization made her a valuable asset as a rehearsal assistant for corps de ballet and as a coach for soloist roles.

When a health crisis forced Joan off stage, she took the opportunity to pursue academics receiving her MS in biology from NYU specializing in the neuroscience of learning and behavior, and MA in dance education through the collaborated program between NYU and ABT on scholarship. The two degrees together contributed to Joan’s unique approach of creating space for artistic freedom while firmly grounded in scientific precisions.

As a dancer, Joan was trained in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus and the Russian Vagonova system, and danced with a Balanchine style company. This along with scholarly research in Cecchetti, Bournoville, and Vagonova (which were the basis of ABT's National Training Curriculum) led her to respect each lineage with its own right. Hence, Joan has been known for her personalized instruction based on dancers' past training and artistic maturity.

A member of National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) and International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) , Joan is certified in all levels of ABT’s NTC and can be found teaching for American Liberty Ballet, Arch Contemporary Ballet, Ballet Arts, and many other places.     Check out Joan's interview with Adult Ballerina Project!

A shorter, no-frill ballet class focusing on clean technique ad proper alignment. Learn how to break down a difficult step and the transitions to complete the dance.

Pre-pointe/pointe:

A class to build strength for pointe work, whether or not you are on pointe. We'll work on proper placement while en pointe and how to roll through the feet and much more!

Variations:

Every month, we focus on a new variation from famous ballets or from American Liberty Ballet repetertoire. We'll start out by learning the steps, and as weeks progress, hash out the transitions and artistry. Pointe shoes are optional for this class.
